Drive axle problem??

So here's the scoop....'89 wagovan that makes wheel noise while driving. It sounds sort of like when you have mud/snow tires on pavement, I guess it's a whirring sound. I've gotten the tires balanced and rotated and this past weekend changed the wheel bearing because through my research I thought that would solve the problem. Well it didn't. It still makes that noise while driving and braking doesn't change it at all. I do get some vibration at hwy speed so I'm thinking that the axle needs to be replaced. I guess my question is if the axle would cause that noise as well or if there is another culprit? I am a novice mechanic and I know there are several jedi mechanics on here so any help would be appreciated. If there is a link for this I was unable to locate it so a steer to that post would be awesome as well. Thanks for looking and have a positive day! 8)

a whirring sound, hmm... i have that, sorta, its kinda mild.
someone mentioned it being a bearing going bad.

Possibly an input shaft bearing (transmission). Does it go away if you disengage the clutch?

I've already changed the bearing and it didn't help. :)

I forgot to mention that it's an automatic, so no clutch to disengage. Or would that be the same as shifting it to neutral while driving?? Thanks for your help :D

err duh i just noticed you mentioned that

this may be a long shot, but shift your car from D to N and see if the noise goes away. then its your ISB. (very very very common issue among our trannies)
