How to replace hatch struts?

Hey y'all

I got a new set of hatch struts. Do I need to take off the trim surrounding the arms so that I can get to the ball joints and take the arms out? I tried to pop the tired struts off of the ball joints, but almost bent the mounting points that the ball joints were mounted to.

Yes I need a shop manual, but in the mean time, how do I get this done?

    You either have to move the plastic trim to access that 12mm hex, or cut off the ball ends of those mounts and take them out with a socket. I've done both, and the cut method wins. The replacement struts will have ends that pop off. (At least the ones I got did)
