Front fog cutout size?

(Yeah, I'm having a slow day and thinking about my car way too much  )

So according to one of the sticky threads, all wagons have cutouts in the front bumpers for fog lights, like this:

Does anyone know the size of these cutouts? I'm pondering a more elegant installation of my Hella 530s. If they'll fit relatively well, I'll cut my bumper plastic and mount them in the stock location. Though I like my current rally car look I'd rather give them a little more protection. But I don't want to cut if it's not going to fit well. I may figure out a way to mount them in the grill rather than in front of it like I do now.

If it helps, my fogs are 7.38" wide, 3.50" tall, and 2.94" deep. The "base to top" measurement (I presume from the edge of the light to the top end of the bracket) is 4.50".

If they fit entirely behind the plastic, I may even rig up some kind of clear plastic cover across the entire opening to further protect them from the elements.

    My baby.

I posted the Stanley part number in that same thread. You might be able to look that one up to get the dimensions. :)

Tried that, but the only link that comes up is a link to the thread in which you put the Stanley part number.

I suppose I could just pull my front bumper and measure it for myself. And being plastic, if the stock cutout isn't the right size, maybe I can cut the right size for my lights. Just have to see how much of a PITA it would be.

I just had my front bumper off anyway. One of my fogs was coming loose because the plastic it was bolted to was cracking. :( So my car is currently fog-less.

But while it was off, I looked at the cutouts for factory fogs. Yes, I used the plural - there are actually two. One is for the Stanley set shown on Haydz's car. The other is labelled Bosch. Must be for some other type of factory fog. The neat thing is that the Bosch cutout will be a PERFECT match for my Hella 530s! The dimensions are almost exactly the same. Unfortunately for the rest of the world, Hella discontinued the 530 a while back, so you can't get them anymore. Won't help anyone else, I'm afraid. :(

Anyway, when I have more time I'm hopeful that I can rig up some kind of mounting bracket - maybe a couple of small pieces of angle iron on the back side of the bumper - carefully cut some holes and have mad tyte JDM y0 fogs.

Yeah theres two cut-outs, one is for a set almost square like my old ones and the other is for the more common wider lenses.

I've decided to go for the OEM look, except using my Hella 530s. I'm thinking that maybe something as simple as a small piece of angle iron can bolt onto the back side of the bumper, and then the light can bolt onto that. I've eyeballed it and the way I'm thinking of doing it (will take and post pics when I do) will center the light in the hole horizontally. My only concern now is vertically - I may need some kind of spacer to drop the fog into the hole. I may not. I may futz with it later this week. I will definitely update and show my progress.

Good info to have. I have never felt it to be worth it for factory fog lights. everyone wants alot of money for them. I like the idea of finding something the same size and bolting it up in the stock loctaion 8)

Suppose I should update this thread, then. :)

I made the cutouts using the Bosch pattern. Installed my Hellas like I described, but didn't have enough space behind the bumper to make them fit like I wanted, with a bracket behind the bumper itself and such. Tried bolting them to the bumper itself and ended up with this:

I hated the bug-eye look, so I took them off. Then I found some cheap amber fogs at the local parts store that had the mounting bolt further forward, moving the entire unit back a bit.

Done! OK, so the holes in the bumper, while perfect for the Hellas, are now too big for what I got, I'm kind of stuck with them. Oh well.

Too bad you couldnt flush mount the hella's. that would be hella sick  So would the smaller cut out fit the second set of lights better? Im thinking about picking up a set of ambers from where ever and doing this. Do you have pics of your brackets you used/made?

The "cutouts" are really just ridges in the inside plastic of the bumper. If you make your own measurements and cuts just right, you can ignore the factory lines and match the exact lights you get. That's what I'd do if I had another bumper to work with. In fact, I'd try to mount the lights before cutting anything, then cut the plastic exactly where the lights should shine through. (And then maybe even glue some clear plastic or plexiglas across the opening - partly for looks, partly to maintain aerodynamics, but mostly to protect the lights and keep snow and crap out of there!)

The current lights are bolted directly through holes I drilled in the bumper, no brackets at all. The brackets I tried with the Hellas were just short pieces of angle iron. Would've worked fine if I'd had enough clearance behind. I do have pics somewhere, but don't know if I bothered posting them because that idea didn't work.

fog lights are fog lights. there not in our stock spot but who cares. I should have taken pics when I had my bumper off. I will next time I have it off. Maybe tomorrow for hood adjustment.

Here's mine while we're thread-jackin'. lol They are mounted at the top, no cut outs.

I know this is an old thread, but ive been wondering about those ek foglights. Good thing I searched and found your post. Im definitely going with these fogs.
  • me and iboyma put '89 Prelude fogs in his...flip the bracket around 180 degrees. There's a hole (horizontal) on the bumper mount, where the metal is pressed together and spot welded. It's right above where you'd wanna mount the bracket.

It fits nicely, kinda siamese right now, but with a little more manipulation anything is possible.
