How do you drill and tap a shift knob?

I've heard of people making their own shift knobs, in fact my old brown zc wagon had a real golf ball that had been drilled and tapped by (i guess) the guys that did the swap before i owned it...

I have no clue what's involved in this and figured someone here could point me in the right direction.

I just want a golf ball shift knob for my 92 civic :-(

Please help.

    Really easy to do.

I cant remember the thread pitch/size.

But get a drill bit slightly smaller than the tap and drill it out, the tap away :D
With a golf ball you may be able to just drill it slightly smaller than you need and force it on, since its softer the the shifter it may just thread itself

you are right the inside of a golf ball is pretty moldable, i bet that might just work, i'll pick one up and see if i've got a big enough drill bit at home, i'll keep everyone uptodate *end run on sentence* ;-)

I'd start by buying it a couple of drinks first.

  • you need an 11/32 drill bit and a 10x1.5 tap.

drill your hole half an inch into whatever you are using for your shift knob. then start spinning the tap in. clean out the shavings and your ready to go.
