can't open child lock rear doors

In my new 89" wagon, both of the inner rear lock buttons (can't think of a better name for them) are broken off so that I can't unlock the doors to get them opened. Really nothing in there to grab even with a pair of needle nose.
Any ideas?

you can try taking off the plastic trim at the inside door latch (trim around the chrome handle) and see if you can reach the lock rod thru there- it runs fore-and-aft . The lock knob at the forward part of the door just goes to a 90deg. pivot that converts that upndown to backnforth :P make sense?

update: confirmed. I went outside and tried it on mine.

Take off the plastic trim (1 screw) and feel above the hole in the door panel. The lock rod runs about 3/4" above and parallel to the top edge of the opening. You need to move that rod forward to unlock.
  • that was quick! I went and pulled one of the plastic pieces back... I can feel the rod in there but it doesn't wanna move. I figure it will come loose with some playing around with it. Then once I get it opened I think I need to go through and lube up everything in there.
  • If the child safety locks are enabled, you won't be able to unlock the door without having it opened or getting at the inside guts of the door. I was able to remove the entire inner door panel with the door closed once. I had taken the door completely apart to paint it, and when I had it all back together, I made the stupid mistake of not making sure it would open before closing it with the inner panel on. After screwing around for an hour trying to get the door opened, I just remove the door panel inside the car and then got it open.
  • LOL Yeah check the child locks!!
  • check the child locks!!

funny, usally you have to open the door before you can do that

    ohwell...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the child locks just disable the inside handle?
  • You are correct sir

My guess is that the knob broke causing the rod(that was connected to the knob)to swing down in the door.

Get a thick hanger or wire probably a foot to 1.5 feet long and bend a 6mm(1/4'') radius ''u'' at the end.Where the rod connects to the plastic swing arm is where you are going to hook with the hanger & lift.
  • When I bought my wagon a bit over a year ago, my driver's side rear door would not open. The previous owner and I believe it was due to him rarely using the rear doors. After a few minutes of moving the door lock up and down every time I got in the car, it eventually worked its' way open. I'm sure if you do the same with the rod, it will work itself free.

A friend of mine used to have an ex-police car. You could *never* open the back doors from the inside yourself. It's like the child locks were permanently enabled. :)

Yeah, both of my rear door lock knobs are broken. The car came that way. Short of replacing the knobs, you just have to get creative. One of mine came with a paper clip wrapped around it to grab onto. I still use it today.
  • I just bought a wagon and the rear drivers side door doesnt open because the child lock is on. the inside handle and the outside handle doesn't open. Any suggestions? Thanks

the outside should still open the door if the child-lock is on.
sounds like something came undone.. the door handles are connected to the lock with metal rods.. seems like one maybe be broken or something. not sure how to open the door otherwise, maybe by doing down the window edge with a wire and "popping" the lock that way?

after you get the door open, then at least you could take of the door card to check out whats going on
  • mine are kind of sticky...i have to pull one door handle just right to get it to open...

Same here. I have to pull the handle out and the door up to get it to open

So, the outside handle on my rear driver side door doesn't work and now some dipstick put the child lock on so now I can't even open it from the inside. Has anyone here ran into this problem before? My autobody buddy said I can try and fish around in the door for the door pull rod but I dont want to mess up my glass or weatherstripping. If that is the only way though it would be nice if smeone could hook me up with pictures of the door internals so I know where to start fishing.

    Thanks in advnce guys!

Maybe this will give you some idea.

This happened exactly to my car, i just took the door apart from inside the car (only way to do it).
And after there i looked around the metal parts and it was that long rod, it wasn't on right and it didn't grab the handle right, it would pull the door to open, fixing it was easy i forgot how but you don't need anything just fiddle with it.
  • same here, try your best to pull off door panel, we adjusted the rods so the handle would pull and it worked!

Thanks so much guys, I'll be trying that asap! Might even take pictures as it seems to be a problem more than one of you have encountered.
  • mines doing the same thing and need to open the panel with door closed it should be fun
  • I'm currently having similar problems, but since I don't want to mess up my door panel (impossible to find a replacement for a Wagvan), I'm thinking about drilling a hole in the exterior door handle and jimmying the linkage with a screwdriver. I can replace the door handle with one from a Sedan in the junkyard....
  • OK, here's how to fix stuck rear doors!

For a door with a broken lock post and the lock engaged:
Removed the door handle trim and use a pair of locking needle-nose pliers to grab the horizontal rod that runs above the latch handle. Push the bar forwards to unlock the door. You'll probably have to lay on your back with one hand pulling the panel away to get the pliers up there. The handle needs to NOT BE PULLED OUT when move the rod.

For the child safety lock being triggered:
Take a pick with a 90* bend and work it between the door panel and the interior trim. You should be able to pull it upward and catch the child safety latch to disengage it. Look carefully at your other door to see the location and action needed.

For being unable to open the unlocked door even with the child safety latch disengaged:
Remove the door handle trim and locate the two screws that hold the door handle mechanism on. Notice that these go through elongated holes in the mechanism. Loosen them, slide the mechanism forwards, and re-tighten them. The door should now open from both sides!

    If this doesn't work:
Take a drill and drill holes in the exterior door handle to access the latch mechanism at the rear of the door. A Dremel tool with a plastic cutting bit would work well to remove as much material as possible so you can see what you're doing. Work the exterior door handle and notice what it does. It probably is not pushing down on the lever that it is supposed to, so shove a screwdriver into the linkage above the lever and operate the door handle again, it should work this time. I'm not entirely sure how to solve this problem if adjusting the interior latch didn't do the trick. For some reason the latches just don't seem to make the levers move as much as the other doors.
