DIY: Sedan Power Door Locks(& P/W)

ok, i have some time now and i might as well do a quick little DIY thread on power door locks.

first of all, parts list from a sedan (stay year specific!!)...

-4 PDL assemblies (one from each door)
-4 wire harnesses (one from each door. also they will include P/W, just ignore these... use them for the future if you wanna get P/W ;) )
-door lock control box (located in drivers door)
-plenty of extra wire

first things first, remove all four interior door panels, the lower plastic panel on the pillar between the doors, and two front seats to clear up space. once the interior door panels are gone, remove the plastic air-blocking wrapping, very carefully.

remove the original door lock assembly, and the original wire harnesses from the front doors. (rears wont have any at this point).

swap over the metal rods from the wagon DL to the sedan PDL units.

now, on the rear you will have to drill some pretty big damn holes in the door pillar to run the wire harness from the back doors to the interior. the rear doors have a hole pre-cut, just a grommet covering it. pop this out. install the wire harness, and run it out this hole.

for drilling, if you look from the inside of the car up on of the openings in the pillar, you will notice an area marked where the hole is supposed to be. dremel it out. (i took off my rear doors for this just for safety, to make sure i dont scratch my doors) then finish running the wire harness through this hole. you should only have two wires coming out from the PDL... one red/yellow and on red/white.

same from the two passenger side door locks. run these three wires and connect them into one wire each. run this into the drivers door and connect it to the red/yellow and red/white on the door lock control box.

next you need a power source wire. you can chose to run this however you want. there is a spot for it in the fuse box, but idk how to run it haha. i just ran mine directly from the battery for now... (not good, i know..)

um, not sure what else there is. its pretty tricky running the new really thick harness in the drivers door. just take your time and be careful.

i wish i had more pics, but nope :( anyways, feel free to ask questions and good luck!

so to do this and p/w you would only need to window motors in addition? nice write up other than the blatant disregard for more pics!!! i really want to do a pdl pw conversion ..... i am so jealous.

yeah pretty much, but you would have to wire that too. which i dont feel like doing. plus im a little nervous installing 17+ year old electrical windows haha.
  • hey, w-dizzle.
thanks for the writeup & info.
this seems much simpler than I imagined it would be. time consuming, of course, but even I could handle this mod. this is the kinda stuff I love doing.

here's what I made over the holiday:

I clicked on the link and it gave me the error I get when I hit the members button by the banner. Can we please fix this? I would really like to see those other write ups!

Change the word board to bb and it will work. The forum was upgraded and the old one was left completely intact in case of emergencys.
  • thanks for the info Wago. ill hit the junkyard this weekend coz its 50% off. ill try to get my set of PDL and P/W as well if i an find one.

    big thanks

anybody thought of running the power lock module on the inside of the car rather then the door? It would save around 8 piece of wiring going through the door.

also, for mine I picked up the plugs from a Civic ex that runs from the inside compartment to the door (oem looking and leak proof). Just food for thought when doing this.

Lx should work fine too, may even be able to find one without power mirrors (which isn't a big deal since its only 3 extra wires)

Does anyone know what car models came with heated seats? was thinking bout swapping these in the same time i do the pw/pl if i can manage to find everything needed.
