wagon wont run(solved bad alt)

...i get to my house a week ago and my amp is smoking as i stop, so i take the posative wire off, leave for a week on vacation leaving the car parked there. when i get back the car has NO battery power whatsoever i hook my sisters car up to it with tha jumpers and it has good power, lights in dash bright as can be and good turnover power. when i take the cables off the car runs then the dash lights get dim along with clock and shortly after that, my rpm guage stops working and shortly after that, the car cuts off. my dad said something about a fusable link, is that where to start or does anyone have a greater knowledge on the subject??? thanks Ian

    could just be the altenator. thats what it sounds like to me. i'm replacing mine next week with a bigger one.

    your alternator is shot. what you described has happened to me many times on various civics and mazdas.

    changed the alternator, fixed it right up. thanks for the help.

    That's what happened to me a few years ago in my POS Ford Aerostar... in the middle of the frikken boonies (Nopiming Park in northeastern Manitoba) at around 11 pm on the way to my cottage. No cell or CB reception. We finally got a boost the next morning !!!
