wagon is eating dizzy caps

ok, so i had to change out a fairly new dizzy cap because the contacts or whatever got fried. it was because the i overtightened the bolts.

well i got a new one a couple months ago and made sure it tightened it very gently, only enough so that there was the itty bittiest bit of effort. now the wagon is running rougher-ish again, so i pulled the dizzy cap off and sure enough, its starting to grind away at the center contact. also there is "brake" dust like stuff all over in there and on the rotor.

my question then is.. why is this? is the rotor too far out, because then the whole dizzy is jacked (its less than a year old). or is the rotor just jacked, also it is less then a year old. lastly, is it because the rubber o-ring that goes around the dizzy and cap is old and bascially gone, is it possible that tiny bit of difference in gap is causing it? im pretty sure thats it... but just want someone else to verify.

dizzy caps are getting expensive, and i dont have much $$ to be tossing around like this.

peace!

I don't think the old/missing o-ring thing would do it. Mine was like that for a long time, and it doesn't substantially change the cap to dist. body distance. Sounds like rotor too far out or dizzy shaft end-play. Look to see if the plastic part of the rotor has walked off the metal insert(is the screw in the center of the hole?) If that's OK, pull the dist and see if you can move the shaft in and out.

i pulled the dizzy off. wiggled the rotor around... its all firm. i took the rotor off anyways and checked to see if maybe the shaft is loose... but its not. not sure how i could tell if its off. if it is its so minute.... :x i hate bullshit like this so much...

maybe the dizzy is protesting the new wheels.

try putting the pinkies back on and see how it runs.

change the rotor along with the new cap and see how it goes. (check it in a day or two)
  • If your cap doesn't have the gasket then moisture can get inside the cap causing some of the corrosion you probably are seeing.

i have the gasket, its just "flattened" from age...

and its not corroded, its literally worn from rubbing... i'll get pics tomorrow. maybe.

Ive recieved oddball rotors from Honda in the past. Did you match your current rotor to the old one proir to install?

And I dont think I need to ask, but your using Honda parts right???

i bought the new dizzy at the same time as my MPFI swap, so i dunno what the original looks like, i just used the same rotor from the DPFI into the MPFI...though the rotor is not the same looking as my original one was for the DPFI dizzy.

the cap i also used for the MPFI dizzy from the DPFI. i compared the two and they were identical. even same part numbers..

BUT.. no im not using Honda parts  just good old Advance Auto. still made in Japan though
  • anyone can print, made in japan ...

    even, you know who

    :)

    tuff luck ...

You just answered your own question right there.

Honda eletronics are finiky. Ive had such bad luck with not using Honda genuine parts in the dist that I wont anymore. Honda only when it comes to anything in the distrubitor (cap, rotor, ignitor, coil). Cap and rotor kits for the EF's are only 7-10 bucks more at Honda then they are anywhere else and definalty save me a lot of useless hassels.
  • I would have to say aftermarket rotors have been my biggest headache. I'm sure the rotor that was in my car before I switched it was wobbling allover the place every time I drove. I always got rotors that seemed fine then within a week they are the plastic is loose around the metal insert. It won't come off because of centrifugal force but it does mess the timing up slightly<
Good cause of pinging. I've head some that have completely fallen off and destroyed themselves, I've had the set screws fall out and destroy the caps, and caps, the best is when you wash your car (not your engine keep in mind) and moisture gets into your cap and then the car won't start.
