Thinking of doing a security system...

Since I plan to keep this vehicle for a while (unusual for me), and I've had my 89 Civic broken into before, I think I'd like to do a security system. I'm not so much concerned with somebody stealing the car, but I want to discourage break-ins. I don't know much about security systems but I've heard that Viper is good.

if you go for it, show us how it goes

It does focus on theft instead of break-ins but if the alarm resists any attempt at disarming, most thieves would decide to move on when all efforts couldn't get the wailing siren to stop, Hopefully before they even grab your deck.
Strictly on a deterrent level...a dash mounted blinking LED and a couple alarm company stickers on the window are as much a deterrent as an actual alarm. Match this to a modest deck and a completley empty interor(quit leaving $500 in CDs and your $300 digital camera on the front seat. Tools are another big one) and most casual thieves will look for a more rewarding target.
And the most common form of entry on our cars is a slimjim. And its easy. The stupid lock rod is very accessible and easily manipulated.
So remove it and install power locks. Find a pair door handles from the rear with no keyhole, install them and remove the biggest weakness in our security.
Of course, now you need bullet proof glass j/k
p.s. ours was practially stolen within the first week of owning it back in Nov. '05. my wiff surprised them in the act on her way out the door to work, we think. it was on the wrong side of the road in the drainage ditch with the driver's window down and the glove box emptied all over the car. the E-brake was ON, too. didn't take anything at all. weird.
...jm.
On top of that i have an alarm with dual stage immobiliser, glass break sensor, shock sensor, piezo ear-splitter, keyless entry etc..
Plus i have the normal little security stickers and the flashing LED as a deterrant. My next mod will be to remove the front door handles and replace them with some rear door handles so there is no more lock barrel to access.
Not saying its not going to get broken into but they'll sure hate my car...
I'm working on that asap.
It's cheap and doable.
The only issue is when what happens when your alarm doesn't work or your battery goes dead? Then you can't open any of the doors with your key. You have to open your trunk and climb through that way.
I've installed power everything on all the doors, except the windows (soon) and even got a power rear hatch/trunk wired up.
but I used a relay & added 16 air horns with 8 pumps,
plus had 2 sirens under the hood and 1 mounted N the rear bumper, plus 2 small Radio Shack sirens under my dash..... so needless 2 say it was so loud U could not help but get away from it......
had every light on it blinking @ different times... (wig wag, strobes)
I had two 24volt batteries keeping me powered up, not including my standard 12 volt under the hood, really had the battery power so I could run my stereo.....
looking two buy a few of the new remote car starter 2way pagers with lcd screens now..... been looking on Ebay...
I'm interested in that as well... can the innards of the doors be ripped out and put into the Wagon, or do we have to start from scratch? If they can, is there any particular year sedan that works, or will nearly any year work? And... the same thing with power door locks... if the doors don't fit, can I just rip out the lock mechanisms from a Honda with power locks, or do I have to purchase an aftermarket system?
I'm looking at getting an '87 Wagon, but I suppose it'd be nice to know for both the 84-87 and the 88+ gens...

the year EX i was talking about was the same as ours. the 88-91. that model came with power windows, but im not sure if it came with power locks. in your situation (the bungee cord) you might look online and find a cheap replacement. junk yards would be a good place to look too.
- Did any of the '84-'87 Hondas have power door locks? And can I just bolt these locks directly onto the Wagon?
-Same goes for power windows... were any '84-'87 Hondas made with power windows, and can those parts be put in directly as well?
I can do some modding to fit the parts, and if I have to I'll track down all aftermarket, but if it's possible to find all the parts I need from the junkyard, and I can bolt them in directly, I'd rather do that.

There are a lot of aftermarket options. I wouldn't mess with the power windows, but the locks are pretty straight forward. Look into Autoloc: http://www.thehoffmangroup.com:16080/Au ... ucts.lasso
There used to be an article on the Resource about installing a power "deadbolt". So you leave your stock locks alone but add an additional locking rod.

can U tell me if they look alike @ all.. Wont need 2 B X~actly the same but that makes it easy
on locks its EASY 8)
But, without further ado, here is a link to a Honda-Tech forum I recently saw... the first post covers a lot of security measures... I'm considering a few of them.
