Trying to remove my RT4wd AT bell housing,

Hi all, So I sold an Rt4wd AT that was leftover from my 5 speed swap to a guy who is rebuilding his and he just needs some internal components. In order to get the weight down to allow it to ship out regular UPS ground I'm trying to take off the bell housing. I removed the transfer case no problem and I removed all the flywheel bolts but I can't quite get it apart. I was able to gently tap it open about 1/4 inch but that seems to be as far as it wants to move. If i lift up on the bell housing it slides off for that first 1/4 inch easily but then you can feel that something is clearly stopping it from going any further. Any idea what's preventing it from coming all the way off? Please help if you know. Thanks -Chris

  • Lots more schematics here: http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/auto/jsp/mws/catdisplay.jsp?inputstate=4&catcgry1=CIVIC&catcgry2=1991&catcgry3=5DR+4WD+%281600%29&catcgry4=KL4AT&catcgry5=

Best I can do as I've never pulled one apart. I'll check my helms tonight and see if I have any instruction for it.

  • You will need to remove the right side cover (opposite of the bell housing) and strip all the gears/clutches off the shafts to get the case removed from the bell housing. Keep in mind that it is really not a loose bell housing like on a RWD transmission. Nearly everything in the transmission is attached to what you are calling the bell housing.

If you are going to strip it down that far you might as well just ship the parts that are needed because you are going to have it in tiny pieces to get the bell housing free.

Yes thanks guys, I took the rear cover off and peeked inside and realized it was bit over my head. I ended up taking it to a local transmission specialist and he took it apart for me on the spot. It took him about half an hour but it would have taken me all night.
  • Hah! Yeah, it's cool watching a pro work on stuff sometimes.
