Driveshaft fixed but now I've got a clunking and pinging.

First, thanks to my dad who fixed my drive shaft assembly yesterday while i attended my sons' soccer tournament! Drives like a charm now! Funny thing though when we were getting the part from National Auto and Advanced Auto Parts here in the Poconos. When I had asked for the drive shaft assembly for the driver's side, it seems they always gave me a longer one, not the one that was needed. We asked to see the passenger side one and it was the correct one needed. Has anyone else encountered this with their suppliers?

Second, my dad noticed a clunking sound coming from the rear end, especially when starting from a dead stop or when shifting to 2nd and 3rd. I noticed it as well and at times when starting from 1st, I'll here a little bit of a hollow metal against metal pinging. From my search on here, someone said the clunking was a frequent issue with rt4wds and it wasn't a big issue. Others have said it was the diff mounts being old and/or cracked. Anyone have a differing opinion or had the same sounds and fixed it? I have no idea about the pinging other than perhaps something hitting my exhaust like the u-joints or something.

third, I tested out the rt4wd yesterday on some snow covered parking area and I have to say it was damn fun!! Bring on the snow!

According to a German-language schematic someone posted some time ago, the front driver's side drive shaft (aka axle shaft) is the longest one of all and the front passenger's side drive shaft is the shortest one of all. The two rear axle shafts shafts seem to be interchangeable.

I own a 2WD and had the passenger side axle shaft replaced 2 summers ago, and it was quite short compared to the driver's side axle shaft.

    Cheers !!
  • Well, looking at the image below, the parts guys (and girl) where bringing the top shaft assembly (part 1) when asked for the driver's side. The one we wanted was the bottom sssembly (part 2). Weird. Seems like they had the parts mixed up in their computer.

Ya, it seems so simple. Their computer list the driver's side driveshaft as part #1 insisting it was the right part no matter how many times we said we had the shaft sitting off the car and it was the wrong one.

Oh well. No matter now as my car is up and running again. Woohoo!
  • I would look into rear diff mounts as the source of your clunk. Just go underneath it and see how much you can move it. I put new in mine and the diff movement is much more controlled, but I have yet to put it in 4wd to see if the problem was fixed (mine clunked too). I am 80% sure the clunk was fixed but the mounts needed replaced either way and probably do on your car as well.

ya, thinking about it now after just having spoken with my father (he was concerned about the noise when he test drove it after replacing the driveshaft, thinking it could explode on me as I drove to work) it seems like the mounts need replacing. We'll jack the car up and take a look. I'll look for prices on my own, but does anyone know how much diff mounts will cost and where to get them?
  • Ditto on the rear diff mounts.
The freaky one with the cylindrical lump of steel was rattling around on mine.
    Poly'ing it stopped the rattle.

The clunk could be from the rear differential mount. The ping is from the u joint that connects to the rear diff. The pin on the u joint is toast.
  • Seems I spoke too soon. After having the wagon back on the road for less than a day, the new (remanned) driveshaft we put in decides to rips it's inner boot, causing more noise to come from the front. Noise that sounded like something would snap in mere seconds if driven any more. Luckily I was almost home. I'm pretty sure the remanned part is covered under some sort of warranty right? heck, it's only been a day!

Hopefully it'll warm up by the weekend so I can get this car back on the road.

Unfortunately it isn't covered in case of R+R f-ups...
    Good luck!

    Good luck!

Called up Advance Auto Parts and all I need to do is return it and get a new one. I may have to buy a new one, go home and then pull out the broken one and return it for a refund. Hope they don't charge me for the core. Luckily these are an easy fix and hopefully I'll have it up and running again for tomorrow!

All we're doing is pulling out the driver's side drive shaft assembly and replacing it. Not much excitement there. Besides, my dad will probably end up doing this tonight while I'm on my way home from work. Should probably be done by the time i get home too so no chance for me to get pics. Unless he doesn't do it tonight of course.
  • All right. I'm looking for answers now. Seems like the part we're getting from Advance Auto Parts once installed, seems to be a couple inches too short. The original part they were trying to sell us was too long and wasn't what is pictured in the image I posted above. As you tighten down on the spindle nut, it seems to be pulling the driveshaft apart and away from the diff case. Can this be? Do we have the wrong driveshaft or are we doing something wrong during installation? Here's a photo of the driveshaft we bought:

Looks like we'll be sourcing another driveshaft from another parts store to compare. Hopefully this will be it. Damn, damn, damn!

Advance online shows cv36036 for rt side, cv36045 for left, BUT it shows the came numbers for DX, CRX etc. You probably got the wrong shaft (too short). I have had my Advance store get my core rebuilt with a 1-day turnaround when we couldn't get the right axle. Had a problem just yesterday with cv axles for a Nissan, had to order axle for a GLE, when the car in question was a GXE...

The part they had listed for the driver's/left side was CV36045 but when they brought it out to us, it didn't look like the one we pulled from the driver's side of my car. CV36036 (passenger/right side) did look the same so we assumed they got there parts mixed up. The same thing happened at National Auto as well. Their computer and their parts book contradicted themselves.

Perhaps we'll have better luck with stores in NJ, not PA.
  • I pulled up the National Auto website and after searching for drive axles, it brought me to the Cardone website. There I was able to find the right drive axle for the driver's side front. It is part number 60-4067. The passenger side drive axle is part number 60-4074. They will have to special order it and it'll cost me $74.72 plus a $45 core charge that will need to be paid upfront. I called Advance Auto to see if I could get my original core back but it had already been picked up. Boo! I wonder if I could give them the newer core one I have but isn't the same part.

I called several National Auto parts stores and each of them said we don't have the part number 60-4067 in stock but we do have part number 66-4060 and since it says it's for a Civic, it should fit your car. They keep on insisting it will fit even though I tell them the drive axle I pulled out of the car doesn't even closely resemble the one they are trying to sell me. Geez... If you want something done right, do it yourself.
  • I know how you feel. It took 3 drivers side front axles from carquest with bad outer joints till I gave up and specifically asked if they can get me any axles from a different manufacturer. Turns out they could get me a brand new one for $30 more. I haven't had a problem with it since and will be buying new axles from now on.
