Civic Wagon Exhust System Dynamics

88-96, USDM & JDM: Aftermarket Headers/Extractors

Unfortunately like most items, there are no aftermarket headers/extractors directly available for the wagon. However, extractors designed to fit in a Civic Hatchback or CRX will fit into a 2WD Wagon without any problems, provided they are for the engine that you have.

However, for the 4WD Wagoneers the transfer case limits the ammount of space for the collector pipe, therefore making it near impossible to have 4-2-1 exctractors. The JDM Shuttle RTi comes standard with a SOHC ZC that has 4-2-1 exhust manifold and this will bolt up to SOHC D-series motors. It will also clear the transfer case on 4WD models, making it a good (but still OE) choice for SOHC 4WDers.
For 4WD models with a DOHC conversion you will need to have an
but the 2-1 collector is much shorter than the DOHC ZC 2-1 collector. 4WD DOHC ZC conversions can use the stock 2-1 collector (2nd piece) from a JDM Shuttle RTi (SOHC ZC) and the stock 4-2 manifold (1st piece) from the DOHC ZC for an OE style, otherwise you will need to get an existing aftermarket set modified to collect into one before going between the engine and transfer case.
If you want 4-1 extractors for your 4WD wagon you may need to have the collector modified the pass slightly lower under the transfer case.

Its the 4WD that has clearance issues... 2WD shouldn't have any problems.

    :D
  • indeed it took me like two hours a grinder and a sledge hammer to get a header to fit my awd car !!!!
its not fun im a machinest and have made alot of funky stuff fit but this was a tuff one

I agree, the 4-2-1 is tricky. I had to bring the stock d16z6 exhaust mani I bought to my local muffler shop to 'make it fit'.

I am gettin an aftermarket header off of honda-tech to see if I can have that one installed, do some pics & post em here.
  • make sure you put some of that anti-seize on the O2!!

and wear gloves when installing a polished header! hand grease pwns!
  • So what's the verdict? Is there an aftermarket header that will both help performance AND fit on the AWD without needing a machine shop?

Not aftermarket, that we know of.

anybody know a decent source for finding that particular exhaust collector from a sohc zc for the 4wd? any jdm importers sell them seperately? where did you guys get yours? i'm getting ready to purchase a dohc zc for my 91' and wanna make sure i can get one so as to not have the headaches with it that you guys did. thanks ahead..."yay my first post on this forum..."

    hehe welcome to the forum!

I'm not sure if anyone in the US has actually done it to their wagon but i live in New Zealand and we basicly only get JDM cars here.. anyway to the point, i didn't purposely source the collector, i have a Shuttle RTi which comes with the SOHC ZC and 4-2-1 header, so i swapped in the DOHC ZC and used the 4-2 piece off the DOHC motor and the 2-1 collector from the SOHC motor and it fits together perfectly (which was lucky because i was about to have a header fabricated!).

As for sourcing one, i know that some JDM integra's came with the SOHC ZC as well so thats another car you could base your search on..

Just off the cuff, i called Strong Honda today and they have that piece available for $40 + GST NZD ($29.60 USD!!) + shipping, gimmie a PM or hit them up yourself at http://www.stronghonda.co.nz ... No idea what shipping will cost you but that sounds almost too cheap to pass up. :D

wow thanks for the info man.....i'm gonna check that out when i'm done writing this. without starting a new thread, how do you like the dohc in the wagon? i swapped one into my 91 hatch over a year ago and i swear by that motor...i think it's the greatest little motor that never made it to america; well for that generation civic anyway. i'm looking forward to my next swap (still need to purchase/ship the motor) cuz i know i'll be able to do it faster and better the second time around. anyways, i'm just confirming that this is a swap worth doing on a wagon....right?

Yeah mate its fun and you should see the look on people faces when a honda (let alone a honda wagon) does doughnuts. :D ;)
  • I know people have already posted about the DC Sports header, but I thought I would let you all know I will be doing the install this week and will leave an update on the process.

    89 RT4wd

    DC header # HHC5002 278.00 no tax/shipping from

    importreplacementparts.com (good service)

Catco cat #? 51.95 with shipping Ebay.

Dynomax super turbo muffler # 17731N 120.00 installed with tip and pipe. The muffler usually costs around 40.00 by itself.

If you want a stock look you could try to locate a DST # 17778 which gives you the dual tips, but it's hard to find and costs more.

A SOHC ZC goes in this summer.

FSC4wd, any chance you got that header installed?
  • FSC4wdFSC4wd familEE
Kinda dropped the ball on installing the header until I swap out the motor. I ended up just replacing the OEM manny with another. BUT, when I do the swap the headers go in one way or another. I will post pics of the whole transformation, even though it will never get out of the big shady area the NJ boys have created around here. Damm, them buggies is tight! Me want to bite the bumper mesh, it's siiiick!
  • does anyone want a custom header back exhaust? i just got done making my 2.5" custom exhaust with all pie cuts. i think i'm gunna make a jig so that i can make them in about 2-3 hours. i have pics of mine, but dont have tome to post yet.

I'm assuming any headers, intake, and/or exhaust that fits an 88 crx or civic hatch, would fit my on my 88 wagovan?
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
intake and headers will fit directly for a 2WD. read up a bit more up here ^ about headers on a 4wd.

as far as exhaust, the ansewr is NO a hatchback exhaust will not be a direct bolt on. you would have to extend the main piping about a foot or so cause the wagon is longer also the tailpipe would have to be extended. not sure if the hook mounts are the same, but pretty sure there is some difference

its not that hard though to fab one up for it though ;)
  • i tried to install 4-2-1 headers on my 90 4wd wagon and the top part fits but the bottom part touches i guess w the 4wd part thing lol.... i think u have to modify the bottom part so it gets to the cat converter... so i just goin to take it to the people who makes mufflers and see what they can do
