1991 RT4WD Problem

I was thinking on trading in or selling this wagon but I thought I might see if someone has an solution to my problem. I thought based on the sound that the problem was my right CV axle......I replaced the CV axle but that did not solve the noise. After switching the switch on the tranny to 2WD the noise is gone. That said the wagon runs in both 2WD & 4WD but the sound must be the result of problem. It sounds similar to a CV axle that needs replaced and depending on how much torque you apply while driving increases or decreases the noise. I aaume this is 4wd related as the sound is gone while in 2WD. Could this be a bearing in the transmission? This is way out of my knowledge and was hoping someone may have an answer for me. After all I just had custom built u joints on my 3rd prop shaft put on for $400 in August, I would hate to lose the 4WD capability now....

    Could be what happen to mine :evil: Check to see if center shaft out of the trans is loose.Or unbolt the cover to the transfer drive bevel gear to inspect the bevel brg inside.It might b going.It's the flat ribbed cvr with 4-6 bolts just to the driver's(USDM) side of the center shaft on the trans.
    Mine had a hole in it after the brg inside exploded.Didn't find much of the brg left.

    You say I can take off the cover to the additional part that the 4wd trans have underneath. Mine has quite a bit more noise in 4wd than 2wd, some is from the rear and I know it needs new rear mounts (on the way) but I thought some of it came from the front possibly as well.

    The noise sounds more like a knocking...very similar to a bad outer CV joint on your cv axle...... it definitely is something that pertains to the Rt 4wd...as I have had it in 2wd for several days now and the sound is gone...

    It's part #159(about 1/3 way down on the last column )on the parts list.The photo is the 2nd pic.It's the cvr just to the upper left of where you bolt the center axle to.It has 5 bolts on it.3 are covered in oil.You can bearly see the ribs. My quess is it's about ready to do a aliens thing.
