RT4WD problem

hey,

I was working on my wagon today and wanted to put my wagon in the 4WD mode since the previous owner had put it in FWD. after I loosend the bolt a bit I tried to slide the orange lever to the left but it wont go all the way to the left and always pops back to the right. Is there a certain trick to it ? Or can it be because the car has been drivin alot of years in FWD that it wont go back in 4WD.

I tried to call the previous owner to ask him how long it's been in FWD but I can't reach him at this time, I think he's on vacation.

Hope you guys can help me out.

  • Try leaving the ebrake loose and pushing the car a little front or back while you engage it. That always works for me.

oke thx, I'll try that in the morning.
  • A word of warning, that aluminum is SOFT. I had to heli-coil my bolt because somebody before me tightened it too much. I use a quarter inch ratchet with some extensions and grab up close to the head (part where it pivots) and tighten it with two or three fingers. This way it is plenty to stay tight, but not near enough to damage the threads.

ya i always thought it felt soft when i was tightening that bolts down..... glas i was gentle and got it just snug.
  • Yeah, one of the previous owners damaged it. I put it in 4wd and thought it might be getting stripped. I later went to put it in 2wd and the bolt just spun as soon as I took it loose. I managed to drill it out and tap it in the car without disassembling anything, but when I tapped out the hole I was kind of scared because it had so little resistance. Now I am extremely gentle with it.
  • thx for the warning, I'll be gentle with it.
  • oke, after some rocking the car front and back a bit it worked, thx alot for the help guys ;-)
