Ideas for spare tire/sub mod.

So basically I want to mount my sub in the spare tire well so that no one will want to break my window to steal it. I also would love to have a full sized spare. What I was thinking is to have something along the lines of the swinging arm type thing that a jeep has on the back with the tire mounted on the back of the car. Any ideas on how to go about this or a good swing arm I could use to put the tire on? I think this will make the wagon look more hardcore too with the roof rack and snow tires on it for the winter. This little wagon means business. :P Can I just run large screw/bolts into the body of the wagon to attach the tire arm, or will they just pull through the metal if I do that? Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

Get one of those tray roof racks made up and put the spare in that, desert rally style.
  • another idea is to make one that blots to where the tow hook is underneath on the frame rail.
  • how about just putting your spare over the sub. I don't know what weels you have but I've seen it done here in Belgium.
buy 5 wheels in stead of 4 and make a special bracket in your trunk to hold your spare so it "floats" over the sub. of course this can only be done if you don't use your trunk space.

I'll try to find a pitcure to better illustrate.

go to a junkyard and see how some small SUVs have theirs fitted, for example the CR-V. i dont really think there would be an actual mounting place ON the car as the panel sheeting is pretty thin, but like ThinkFab said you could try having it mounted on the tow hook under the car or just wherever under the car =)
  • I looked around for a picture but cant find one.

my buddy did a silimar thing but it's not in his trunk but on his backseat. underneath the wheel is his sub.

  • Thats an interesting idea, but I don't think it will help much for deterring theft.
  • i've been contemplating on putting an rsx OEM bose sub where the spare goes but i believe you'd need a 16" spare to fit it. Can anyone confirm???
  • Awesome. Thanks for the ideas. I'm thinking that some sort of under car attaching sounds good. I'm going to go look around down there and do some brain storming today and see if I can get a solid idea worked out.

I thought about mounting on top of the car before, but decided I like the swing arm mount a little better. As for the theft thing, I think it will help because no one will see it back there. ...Unless you're just talking about the post right above yours.

my 1988 mazda 323 wagon has the spare under the car, if you find one in a junk yard, take a look at the hardware/mounting and see if it's possible to switch it over, looks pretty easy. space underneath will most likely be your downfall.

i had a friend who used fiberglass to mold a sub box in his spare tire well. that way you've got the deep tone you want from the sub. it sat flush with the floor, so you couldnt see anything. then like everyone says, you can just fab a bracket so that the tire sits above it so it just looks like you have a spare tire sitting in your trunk, but its really hiding your sub!
