Help with transmission?

Going to buy a trans. after work, supposed to be from '91 DX sedan.

Somewhere recently I saw a method where you put the trans in gear (1st?)and rotate the input shaft (10?)turns, then look at the position of the diff. output to determine ratio. Anybody know where to find that?

Or is there another method?

thanks in advance.

    found it.

Looking at bellhousing side of trans, mark input and output shafts at 12 o'clock. Put in first gear. Turn input shaft 10 full turns clockwise. Note position of output: Just before 9o'clock is Si, just after 9 is DX, past noon is HF.

I'm taking the HF out. How does the wagon 2wd stock final drive compare to DX sedan?
  • should be exactly the same.....2wd Wagon D15 DPFI = DX, nothing fancy.

Likely this is the pic you were talking about :)

    Yes, I helped a little :)

Although you a better idea using 4th gear, just have to use different math.

Thanks! I was just wondering whether it would be worthwhile to salvage the original box. When i got the car the input shaft bearing was shot, and had been driven like that for awhile. I noticed in SiWagon's post he said wagon was 4.058:1 versus 3.88?

I'm not looking for racing performance, just maybe pull a small trailer I'm working on. The HF will indeed go 80 in second, 100 in third etc., but it's like driving around without a first gear.

Oh, and yes that is the picture. Good stuff... now if I'd read a little more maybe I could've avoided this next snag:

I just went out to the shop and looked it over in the daylight. No groove on the pilot bearing part of the shaft and 21 splines makes it an '88, right? Can I bolt this to my '90d15b2 if I use the 200mm clutch and pressure plate? I guess my question is: are the holes in the flywheel for the clutch cover the same?

bump. Anybody know offhand if '88 trans will fit as long as I use the 21 spline clutch disc?

Probably not worth salvaging unless you can do a minor rebuild or find a used Wgn tranny. To get a rough idea of 4.058:1 versus 3.88 drive a regular Civic in 4th vs. 5th gear.
    Here's the deal it's a few more horses(Wgn tranny) or a 1 to maybe 2 more MPG(DX tranny)

    .
    NO.

Yes ,I'm99% sure. The only difference should be smaller diameter clutch & spline count.
