91 wago auto question

So my mother in law pops over with her 1991 wago (i'm supposed to put a deck in for her) I get into the car and i notice the park light is illuminated....
Wierd eh, key is out of ignition and car is in park.

So i put key in cycle thru part to D2 and back and turn ignition off slowly and its all good.

Put radio in.

start car check stuff and drive around the block, and park......key off........lights on again.......cycle gears, play with switch nuttin still on.

Get out of car and notice running lights are on? can't turn em off, cycle more and more on gears and ignition switch......still on.

So im thinking ignition switch worn causing daytime running light module to stay working?

Played with the idea of safety neutral switch but car locks in park, must depress brake and gears all select and highlight in cluster?

what do boys think?

  • Ok, So I disconnected the daytime running light relay and running lights are still on.
Started pulling fuses and have just pulled the daytime, radio, cigarette lighter fuse out and prob is solved
Just for now. Im leaning towards headlight switch being buggard but questioning power being to the shift selector colum? Im thinking power is on perhaps due to ignition tumbler?

Hmm....has she ever had a dead battery? I would suspect the ignition switch as well. I think the best thing to do would be to get a hold of a wiring diagram for the vehicle and see how those circuits tie into the gear selector indicator in the cluster. I'm pretty sure the electrical part of the ignition switch comes off of the bottom of the cylinder itself so you can take a look at it.
  • Yup, on it now. Im heading towards ign switch now.
  • So started pulling fuses, went straight for the running light fuse........still on

So pulled some others, got to cigarette lighter, clock, dome light and instrument cluster......went out.

So now no power to radio and clock and dome light......turned headlights on and radio and clock work..........

Its the combo switch. wierd eh?

check the radio harness.. sounds like the illumination circuit is tied together with the constant circuit (red/black- illumination) and white/blue (radio constant) or the deck is back feeding internally causing the issue.
