88 RT4WD Tranny splines

Are the RT4wd Transmissions the same as the other civic models in that the 88 tranny is diffrent from the rest of the years, or does the RT4wd tranny have the same number of splines no matter what year it is?

All Civic's have the following spline count.
    88=21 spline count
    89-91=20 spline count
    90-91=went to a 210mm P.P.(larger)

I have an 88 tranny sittin round, I should check this
  • Please do check.

I am unwilling to belive that the 4WD tranny is the same unless someone has checked this already.

I will need to know for SURE when I get my wagon!!

Well we put the same motors in our cars so the splines pretty much have to be the same..

 Go down to your local parts store.Ask for a '88 4WD clutch.SLOOOWly (remember there's only a single spline count difference)count the splines.

 Now ask for a '88 Civic(any except the wagon one you just counted)) clutch.Goto a different store if u want.Count the splines. Now you'll have PROVED it 2 ur self.

I understand the difference between 88 and 89-91... what im saying is the wagon shouldn't be any different to the civic in that respect. :D
  • I would have thought the RT4WD tranny might have stayed the same the whole way through the line, 88 through 91.

    Interesting.................

    I know.Mine's a '88 that I did a clutch job on.O

Other '88 Wagon onlies:ITR LC & lightest wagon.
  • I've got a G plate UK Shutle which makes it:
    G 01 August 1989 31 July 1990

So. I should be 21splines yeah?
That means I can use a clutch from a later hydro box without any troubles. I sure hope so. I know the CRX owners here have trouble at times trying to find uprated clutches. Gonna suck if I can't get one cheap for the turbo :?

    Oh, further reading:
For the RT4WD, use the RT4WD flywheel, clutch kit
That's from Pacifier about swapping a DOHC into the RT. Damn, so the clutch and flywheel is different to normal civic one? If that's the case am I sol as far as after market clutches ?

This looks like every other D series clutch I've seen:

Turbo_teg seems to have just used a ACT clutch not specifically for the RT?

    Talk about using replacement flywheels:

Various posts talk about the throw out bearking being different.
Is that the only problem, so I can use any clutch with correct number of splines? :|

ya theres differences for sure in 88 to 89 trannies i have them both sure enough they wont interchange.
  • But your clutch itself wasn't wagon specific, so any clutch with the correct number of splines ?
