Clutch issues

I have a 91 RT4wd. Today on my 50 mile journey on highways with stop lights, I had 3 instances where I could shift into gear. So I had to stop, turn off the car, put it into 1st gear and start it up. When I started it up it jumped forward even with the clutch pedal depressed so I could tell that the clutch was engaged into 1st. However, after that it shifted through all the gears just fine. And this happened 3 different times. I immediately thought was the clutch is bad but the transmission has been on its way out for a while (syncros are all shot). Also, if it is the clutch, I have a spare clutch/flywheel/flexplate for a D16Z6 engine front wheel drive. Are these interchangable?

Check your linkage. Both under the hood, and near the lever.

what should someone look into/for, when inspecting the shift linkage as you stated?

As for your D16z6 'clutch/tranny' replacement question. I had to replace mine due to a spring coming out the pressure disk (think its called that). So its a swappable part, put those z6 parts to use if needed!
  • It doesn't have shift linkage, it has a cable. What would look out of the ordinary in that scenario?

Check for a cracked pedal assembly, it's far and away the most common failure.

    That's what I mean.

My first RT had a problem where I couldn't get into some gears. Thought the tranny was bad.

I took my center cover off to inspect the 'linkage'. Somehow the adjustment had backed itself off. Very weird.

    But, bam is likely right.
  • And you think the pedal could cause it to happen only 3 times though? And randomly too?
Where on the pedal assembly should i look for the crack and what can I do to fix it besides just replacing it?

    same here.

for me its hard to go into 1st gear. no grinds. once its in 1st it goes in the other gears fine but feels like it can be smoother. but reverse always grinds a little until i pull it down and it slowly stops and finally goes in... i would like to figure this out before it ruins the tranny.
