Coolant temperature....Too hot?

I have the impression that my 1989 AWD Shuttle is running to hot. The temp gauge is useless (it stays at the middle no matter what). And eventhough the water is not boiling, the engine gets incredibly hot even on short non-demanding runs.

Does anyone knows what is the actual operational range for the coolant temperature? Any ideas how can I effectively measure it ?

Cheers from Chile !

?Is the temp gauge in the middle even when the car is cold before you start it?

?Secondly does your fan come on?

Maybe check temp by starting car with radiator cap off and putting a thermometer in the radiator top .. any other ideas?

Engine should operate in the 180- 195 degree range (Fahrenheit). If you don't trust the gauge, you should definitely check actual temperature with a manual gauge or a thermometer.

Check to see that the cooling fan operates.
Check to see that the thermostat is opening.
