Clutch Cable loosened itself up ?

Yesterday i stoped at the gas station.. No problems in the way in, came out, went to take off and my clutch pedal went right to the floor and the clutch would not dissingage.. I expected to find a broken cable when i looked at it today.. But the cable does not seem to be broken.. I tightened up the plastic adjusting nut till it was pretty good and tight and that got the clutch back.. then i took it for a little ride came back and checked it and the plastic adjusting nut would turn again.. Is there something that is saposed to keep that nut from loosening up ?
One more question.. If i get a new cable for it, how does the pedal end attach to the pedal? It appears the pedal assembly has been welded in from the previous owner already. So im not sure if the pedal will come off or not.. Hoping it doesent need to to to attach the new cable.. Thanks for any advice.

  • Sounds like the cable is stretching and in the process of breaking.

More likely, the pedal assembly is broken and flexing.
  • Could also be missing or have a damaged rubber anti loosen washer (whatever its called). Without, vibrations from the engine could make it come loose.

    Just another option

Is this anti losen washer down on the adjuster? After tightening the adjuster back up.. I went out driving tonight.. It feels like it loosened up a little bit again, but didnt go all the way to the floor this time.. It just feels like there is a little more play in the pedal then there was right after i tigtened it .. I cant see any new breaks in the pedal assembly doesent mean they arent there though. I didnt notice any sounds comming from the pedal though and everything feels on there.. I know its been welded once already though. Not sure if i should replace the cable and see if that works.. or if i should pull the pedal assembly and see if there is a break in it that i cant see.. What do you guys think ? If i do replace the cable, how does the pedal end hook to the pedal? can i hook it to it with out having to pull the addembly down? Thanks you folks for your help .

Changing your clutch cable takes all of 15 minutes and no tools. Extremely easy just get a good working flashlight to see under your dash!
Forgot to add, you need to check your pedal assembly, it's really common and it's free to check.

It should be right under the nut. Has a rubber nub that prevents the nut from rotating. Can you tell if it is loosening up? Take a paint pen and mark the nut/threads.

Agreed. Sounds like what happened to me when i thought my clutch was bad. I dropped my trans three times in one day just to find out that the pedal assembly was broken.

Just throwing it out there, this happened to me once when I was out driving too. Turns out it was the plastic adjuster nut on the cable. The threads on it weren't in the best shape. Just something to take a look at.

Are wagon pedal assemblies wagon specific? Or can I use one from another EF? I think mine may be breaking. :(
  • Yes the pedals are wagon specific but the differences are slight.

I have 91 EX 4 door pedals in my wagon (so i could have cruise control switches). It bolted in but I had to "clearance" the AC duct or the clutch pedal would hit. A little heat and pushing in the right place solved the problem.

Is there a good way to know how tight to tention the cable?
  • It should only be tight enough to have tension. Any tighter and you are putting added stress on the cable. Like Apocalypsox mentioned, it could be the nut itself.

The cable should be adjusted so that the throwout bearing is not touching the pressure plate when released. I like to set them where I can move the release arm (at the transmission) about 1/8" before I feel the bearing make contact. That translates to about an inch of free-travel at the pedal.

Fine tuning the adjustment can involve preference, OK so long as

    1) the release bearing isn't touching
    2) the clutch can be fully disengaged
