A few questions

Ok gentlemen, I have a few problems with my car and really no idea what the cause of them is.

First, when i turn the steering wheel to the right, it makes a high pitched humming sound that is coming from the front right. Only happens when the wheels get passed the middle.

Second, when the car is not warmed up yet, i give it gas, and it sputters off the line, sometimes stalling. When the car is warmed up however, this is not an issue.

Any thoughts on what these problems could be? Thanks.

  • when you say front right, do you mean driver side?
just check everything out. alignment, how tire is wearing, fuid and belt if you have power steering.
remove the wheel where you think the noise maybe.
    start illiminating them.
  • humming is prolly the power steering if equiped with PS. if not id check motor mounts to see what condition they are in. as far as it sputtering is it due for a tune up?
  • Its on the passenger side. Weird thing is, if i turn the wheel all the way to the left no sound, when i start turning to the right, it doesnt make any sound till i get passed the middle.
  • I need to replace the motor mounts anyways, so i guess ill start there. As far as the sputtering goes, it only happens when the car has sat for a full day. I've google it and it seems to be the fuel filter? Can anyone confirm this?

Honestly just do a full tune up. Spark plugs, wires, filters, etc, etc.
Or it could be a vacuum leak somewhere.
Mine does the same thing sometimes. When cold and I press the gas it'll die but when it's warm it doesn't do it.
  • I agree with jdm tune up plugs, wires, rotor, cap, air/fuel filter. then maybe check your timing if theres no improvement.

Might be worth it to look into crankshaft position sensor (CPK). As it does alter and have similar effect as you stated. Had the same issue once, after I had fixed my main relay thinking it was fixed, so I knew it had to be that issue and it literally was the CPK. Seems to be an issue with ZC DOHC to oddly ran through a lot of those yet managed to snatch a grip of them for cheap...

Also to note, my buddy had the same issue with his Prelude before he fix/sold it this week for a Mazda Protege i believe. Told me it would sit for a bit or all day and the issue would come back or cause a sudden surge to it dying out or just acting funny when it was running/turning on... Check it out, might help or not, but wouldn't hurt to try. Best of luck!
  • If small particles of debris are in the fuel line it could collect in the fuel filter and cause that but only way to really kno is to change or flush it. And check the basics just do a full visual inspection of suspension. If you can check ball joint free play.
  • It could be low fuel pressure from the fuel filter being clogged, And when the car sits the fuel pressure takes time to build up pressure to push through the nasty fuel filter? Just a guess. :D The noise when turning, Put the front of the car in the air and push on the top and bottom of the tire, Feel for movement. If there is its a wheel bearing. Then push on the left and right sides of the tire, could be a inner or outer tie rod, Old cars do weird things.
