New guy in VA

Hey everybody!

I just moved out to VA from the Oregon, and I'm now actively looking for a civic wagon. Back home I drove a 1988 4wd subaru justy which really got me on the "ugly" sub compact scene. I loved my last car, but the parts availability leaves a lot to be desired, so I'm switching over to the civic wagon. The first time a wagon REALLY caught my eye was wagon attack II (quite possibly the best youtube video ever right?), but I digress...

I'm going to be out of the area for about a month so I'm planning to buy around early September. What I'm wondering is: what should I look for in these cars? Common problem/wear areas? Best year? What should I expect (bodywise) on a 20 year old car on the east coast?

Don't feel limited to these questions! I'm anxious to learn as much as I can before I buy.

The way craigslist looks for wagons that might be my best bet. How much should I expect to pay for a good running 90-91 rt4wd?

No better way to get to know a new car than a road trip :D All my extended family lives in Jersey so I was planning a stop there anyway!

Just found this one too, but it seems more like it'd sell before September:

I'm gonna call the guy tonight. Does 1000 sound reasonable for that car? how many miles do these things typically go? I'm thinking I might offer him his full asking price if he'll hold it until the 10th.

    Edit: its an automatic
  • Times are hard i would offer $700-800. The car has some issues ( hard to start, piping, and he said in the post make a reasonable offer). If he says no, then offer $1000 if you really want it.

Well I'm back on dry land, and no wagon :( looks like I'll be gone for a while in three weeks too. Gotta put my wagon dreams on hold until july... on the plus side I'll have lots of money saved for goodies!

I HAVE RETURNED! Can't find any wagons anywhere! I heard back home everybody is into 'em now too... has anyone found any websites like craigslook used to be? I wanna search within a bigger distance than 4 or 5 towns.

How far away do you want to look? There are half a dozen on Atlanta craigslist.

Depends on the deal! I'm looking pretty much within a 250 mile radius right now, but I'm not saying I'm staying exclusively within my 250 mile range. I already have a 05 Legacy GT wagon, and a Jeep, so I'm not really in a rush. Main thing I'm looking for is a manual in good shape (fingers crossed for a RT4WD). I'll check 'em out when I get off watch. We can't look at craigslist on the boat! Thanks for the good lookin' out.

I found a 6spd rt4wd (already sold), and it got me wondering: how exactly does the 4wd work in this system. I've heard its more like AWD, and coming from a subaru justy I was wondering if I should treat the drivetrain more like 4wd or awd.

    Couple basic questions:

Is it a full time 4wd system? Or switch actuated?
Is it a 1x4 type drive (fwd being 1x2), or a 2x4 system that spins back and front depending on traction?
Has anyone seen any really good writeups on the whole system? Or a dependable wiki link?
