1998 Subaru Wagon factory roof rack on 91 Wagon

Okay i just completed my rack project and i must say it looks great. It cost me $27 from my junkyard, and i already had primer and paint laying around.

Here it is with just the rails.

pop off the covers to expose the two bolts on each corner

cut the crossbars down to civicwagon width

the top one is the subaru length and the lower one is civicwagon width

drill new holes for the brackets to screw onto the crossbars, i used 3/16 for the crossbar and slightly smaller for the new holes on the bracket

The rubber strip slides out and it's ready for cleaning and paint.

And the newly painted and assembled crossbars.

This involves drilling eight holes into the roof and possibly getting leaks. I'm not recommending you do this but hey it's a $27 option and you end up with a factory looking rack.

I'm currently debating how I will waterproof it :?

I hope this serves somebody some good. If anyone is interested in doing the same let me know because there are two more donor Subie's here.

NICE!!!! use E6000 from tap plastics around the screw areas, you won't ever have a problem with leaks after that! its even rated for UV protection!!!! You bastid! nice find for $27 bucks haha!!!! LOOKS GREAT!

Yakima makes mounts that attach to these crossbars as well. I'll post a review once I get some. I'm waiting to pick up used ones on CL because i'm a cheap bastid lol.

great mod! i did the same with mine..got a subie roof rack..i dont think there will be any leaking problems..the subie that i took mine off of just had holes drilled in the roof with some rubber grommets under the bottom of the rack so as long as yours had that then you should be fine

    heres mine

wow that's sick you'rs had the Yakima crossbars! and it looks dope on your wagon! what did you have to do to make it fit??

i saw that rack you have, i was on the 99 subie if remember correctly

then there were 96 which had a different (ugly IMO) rack as well, but all the 98's i saw had the one like mine - it's strange there were so many variations between the few years
  • Nice set ups! I gotta keep an eye out for a good deal on one of these.
