I turn my ignition and my wagon just dies?

Well I was just on my way out and I keep my wagon garaged daily. So I get in and I turn my key in the ignition and right away it starts then it dies???? So I try again and it starts but then my check engine light turns on for a bit then goes away. So i have the car sitting running for a little to warm up, then I turn it off. Then I wait about 5 minutes and try to start it again, and the same things happen. I turn the key its starts then it dies quickly! then I do it a second time then it starts, but this time with no check engine light on. What might be the problem? Need help ASAP! Thanks.

Look under the passenger footwell carpet and count the flashes- the code will at least tell you what the CEL meant.

Fiddle with the switch a bit- does it do it if you let the key come back easy versus snapping back from the start position?
  • your problem is most likley the ign switch back . when you start the car hold it in the cranking position and see if it runs longer . i change these all the time for the same problem. you can buy just the electrical portion of the switch from the dealer . and it is very easy to replace

So most likely it would be the ignition switch? Because I don't want it to be a bigger problem, because my wagon is my DD. Thanks a lot for the help :D
  • this happened to me this summer and turned out to be the ignition switch

Really? because Ive had a few people tell me that. Because I turn the ignition and right when I let go It dies right away, but always on the second time it start. So most likely its the ignition switch?
  • well play with it a little, when i held it in between II and III i could keep the engine running (i was stuck 40 miles away from home) so i drove it 40 miles while holding the key right there. Its really easy to replace too, just 2 philips heads on the back of the lock cylinder and plug it into the fusebox.
  • i was wondering if the ign switch fixed your problem

I'll let you know this weekend cuz this is my SECOND wagon to do this to me....I'm assuming the ignition switch is the plastic part that butts up to the back of the ignition lock cylinder? If I hold my key past the second accessory position the car stays running. But as soon as I let it go back like normal, it dies. Do you know how hard it is to drive ad shift and hold your key in that position...really hard lol.
  • yeah its the plastic piece with all the 4-6 g wires behind it. It must be hard to drive a stick and hold the key! but mine is auto so i was able to get there much easier. haha
