Honda Civic RT4WD wagon from Australia! NEW

Sounds like prime candidate for a swap!
Weld/epoxy up that sunroof, fix some of the bugs (no pun intended), swap and it sounds like you'll have a great wagon. How many miles does the car have on it? The writing on the motor gives it away as a replacement.

While you are at it also replace/recore your radiator as it is probably full of rubbish. Replace thermostat and water pump before you put the motor in.
Im not sure what its like in Aus, but in NZ you could pick up a carby D15 like you have for $100 (i just took a D16 SOHC ZC to the scrap dealer because no one wanted it). I havnt worked on a carb model (they are the devil) but if you are anything like most red blooded males, if you can pull it apart chances are you can put it back together again with minimal swearing
For the Sunroof, clear out all the gutters, the often get clogged up with dirt/tree leaves/etc etc and dont drain causing the water to come inside.
I could list ten other reasons as to why the temperature gauge would have risen into the red. As long as it didn't stay there for long there's no reason why the engine wouldn't have survived it either, without a warped head.
From my experience too, it's much more common for a headgasket to begin leaking (a gradually increasing consumption of coolant, or loss of power) as apposed to a sudden 'blow out' causing the temperature to spike and rendering the engine unusable.
good luck !
