Inside door latches loose?

Well I got my 88 rt the other day and this has been the first day to actually go through and clean and tighten etc. Well I noticed my latches on 2 doors seem to be a little loose.Inside latches. Like you pull them to open and they dont exactly bounce back. Got to looking and the spring is just behind the plastic cover. Is this right or should it be behind the metal bracket? The top part of the spring. I hope I explained it right if not let me know this is kinda bothering me and ill try and get pics up. Thanks in advance.

Try and get some pics to help out a bit. I have a vague idea of what you're talking about.

Upload them onto tinypic.com and resize them. It's very easy. I'm no computer person and I can do it. lol

It is that rusty top part of the spring. Is that supposed to be behind the metal plate or just behind the plastic trim piece?.....224.jpg

I replaced mine from a 4 door. Mine were really loose and had lots of play.
