  • take off your vacuum line and see what it feels like.

^Pretty much... I accidentally reversed my check valve to the brake booster when i first did my wire tuck. I wouldnt recommend running without a brake booster, on a daily. Maybe a track car, or a show car. But if you ever had to jack on your brakes in traffic, youre not gonna stop in time.

I'm running one that I made myself. I'm using the OEM MC and a Tilton proportioning valve. All my brake stuff is custom. About the only things that are still OEM are the MC, some of the hard brake lines, and the rear ITR calipers. The rest is a mix of custom parts, parts from Earl's (plumbing), Wilwood (front calipers and front and rear 2 piece rotors) Tilton, and a few other things.

I am able to safely drive the car on the road. Yes, the pedal is much more firm than the OEM setup with the booster, but that does not prevent me from stopping properly in an emergency situation. I "needed" to remove the booster for clearance reasons with my powertrain.

If I get a chance, I'll post a couple pictures of the setup.
  • Why do people do this?
I'm just curious why making it harder to brake is a good thing. Does it increase pedal feel massively? Can you feel your brakes overheating or something?

brake boosters are stupid all they do is break i cant imagine running without one could be worse than running a blown one , i might just swap my old non working one with a new one and install a new master cyl.
  • the idea behind running a non booster set up is like running no power steering on a track car, it allows u to feel the responce of the car better. Idealy you would run prop valves for brake tuning as well as more agressive race pad. The lack of the boost also decreases disk wear due to the pads, however, the pads compensate for less pressure applied by the driver when comparing it to the booster.

I have the kens and love it.(not on my wago, on the egg) the car stops just as well as when it had a booster, if not better. it is a bit more of a workout. but it just keeps my right leg on par with my clutch leg lol. and in a shaved bay it really completes the look.
  • Good info here. I've wondered why people did this: now I'm gonna text Ryan from rywire and ask him about his.

That looks like a Wilwood single piston master cylinder. I wouldn't say that would be as safe as the OEM setup.
Aswell as having to apply more pedal effort to brake, being a single diaphram setup, it means that the brakes would have to rely on one diaphram to feed pressure to both front and rear brakes.

Imagine if this brake master cylinder gave up or had a fault. It would mean that you will lose all brakes to front and rear at one time! Whereas the OEM cylinder is a tandem setup, where if e.g the front brakes fail, the rear will still have brake effort.

wouldn't be the safest mod, but i must admit, it does tidy up the engine bay somewhat!
  • The OEM system is actually dual diagonal. If one part of the master fails, you still have one front and one rear brake on opposite sides of the car. Still not very effective at stopping the car though. I had a front brake line failure at autocross once. Pedal went right to the floor and pumping didn't make it better. There was no brakes. The E-brake wasn't particularly effective at stopping the car either, and it was working perfectly. I got the car slowed enough to avoid any incident, but it was touch and go there for a second or 2.
