Ever have your wagon totaled?

Well i recently got in an accident and they are deeming my car totaled. So they are giving me what my car is "worth" and it kind of scares me because my wagon wasn't the prettiest thing. (has dings on doors and fender and hatch)

I was just curious what people have gotten for their wagon via insurance.

  • I got $1500 for my Realtime. However, I had to dispute the price with them because they originally offered me only $1200 (which is b.s for a real time). So I asked where they got their prices from and they said that they called honda dealerships and asked them how much they would sell a car like mine for then averaged the price out. But they said I could dispute the price and email them links to comparable wagons in my area like craigslist, autotrader etc. (which they couldn't use for reference). Be wary though because by the time the got to my links they were all dead so they just said they looked it up themselves and offered me $1500, which is still a b.s price but I took it. All the realtimes I sent were all over $2000 and mine was actually on sale while I got in the accident and was up for $2200-$2500. So you can probably get a decent price for yours but you just have to fight for it.

I wonder if it possible to insure them for a certain dollar amount? Instead of the insurance adjuster deciding or calculating what they think its worth.

there is a way but you have to pay extra per month, My wife got me the extra insurance for my wagon for X-mas. If my wagon gets hit, burned down, stolen, or aliens abduct it I still get 4500.00

    Nice!
  • i had my 98 hatch readjusted for book value +$4000
as far as them only giving you $650 for it id fight that tooth and nail and get a real amount for it
  • I believe I got $2100 for my wagon.

I "self insure" my wagons. Just bank the money you'd pay in premiums and deductibles, then if the worst happens just buy another one.

Extra insurance? Is this something offered through all insurance companies and is there an extra heavy price?
  • 99% should have it as a "rider"
depending on how much you want and what the car is will effect the price
  • This is the current stare of my wagon and it would be a total by any insurance adjusters opinion. I figure a couple of hundred bucks at the local boneyard some help from a chain and a tree, a BFH and a rattle can of flat gold-flake should have it back to normal.

Mine isn't going to insurance since it's liability and only covers the other persons vehicle but a 20 or so year old Civic will fetch about what they offered you give or take a few hundred. The key to getting the most is to find comparable models in your area and show how yours is worth the same or more because of x,y and z(give specific details). Also they will usually give you a percentage of money you dumped into the car for repairs within the previous 6 months to one year or 12000 miles. So if you have receipts show those too.

I had a 84 CRX they tried to total for 1250 about 10 years ago. I told them I'll take 1200 and keep my car/title as is and repair it myself. The insurance agreed.

oooouuuuchhhh! :( Have you also checked the undercarriage of the wagon? You won't want steering or alignment issues. :x
