The piaa thread

What are the replacement options for the piaa headlights? I'm thinking about putting a bullbar on my wagon and would want to know before I go that route if it's a headache to change the lights if they burn out.

Do you have to replace the whole thing or just a bulb? What's the size of the bulb??

Think Piaa supplies stuff for them still?

It's just an H3 bulb. PIAA makes the actual lamp.

Depending on the shape (quality) of your lamp, it takes less than a minute to change. My lamps were rusted shut, so they took some convincing. But I got it done.

man i gotta get my wagon driveable before i cant sweat getting a bull bar...
( would b nice to have to mount a winch on.. )

You wouldn't want to mount a winch on a factory bull bar. It's made of all aluminum.

oh snap that wont ever work... ok gonna have to hit up a junk yard or get something fabbed up ....
  • 3rdace, you say that you put HID's inside your lamps? how would this work inside the bull bar lamps?
  • 3rd4ce3rd4ce Council Member
just the same as the high=9005 or low=9006... i think your bull bar stock bulb# is H3..
  • Does anyone know the exact size of the PIAA Oem bull bar bulb? Is it H3 for sure?
  • CharbCharb Administrator
H3 for sure. One of mine was bad. Seller included a new one and it was an H3.
  • Bullbat is aluminum? Shoot time to start a design and make my own light bar lol.
  • I want to order some HID's though, still H3? any brand in particular you guys recommend?
  • CharbCharb Administrator
I'm anti-HID, so I'm the wrong person to ask :)
  • Really? Why? Hid's provide superior lighting...
  • CharbCharb Administrator
Because they're fucking annoying (on coming) and completely overkill if you live in a city. If you don't live in a city, get an extra set of lights (see my car). I don't feel you need to have HD vision when driving your car.

People might as well drive with their brights on all the time. That's how bad they mess with my eyes.

    I'll just stop there

Agreed - Hid's are overkill. I was thinking some lights mounted on my Yakima would be sweet.

i've thought about doing that several times! i have a set of PIAA lights and i just need to find a rack.

DDM tuning makes a good HID kit.
its not nearly as overkill as you guys make it seem.

If you're overly light sensitive (like myself), it is a huge difference. I wouldn't be able to drive if every car had HIDs.

People need to pay attention instead of making excuses for poor driving.

It's like driving in the snow...
  • ive done HID conversion on every car ive driven over the last 8 years and i love them....and they are adjusted correctly
and i was under the idea that most people didn't run their bull bar lights all the time
im having a bar fabbed up for my wagon to hold 2 standard yellow HID swapped fogs and a pair of 5" baja laser 130 watt "OFF ROAD" lights

also its not the issue of people doing HIDs in stuff that blinds you its the point they dont adjust the lights afterwards
any power in stupid hands is trouble for other people....thats why you dont let kids play with guns...same reason stupid people shouldnt run HIDs

Not many can attest, but I personally don't. Honestly, they're not that bright (not that I would if they were). Much dimmer than my headlights. I've got them aimed low (useless when up). Basically fog lights. So sometimes when I take 'the back way home' off the freeway, I will use them. I'll try and take some pictures soon. I think my expectations were too high with how bright they would be. I really wanted something that I would definitely only be able to use off road. Someday I will upgrade to such setup. Stocky's don't cut it.

Check some pics here: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=11104 I'll take more specific pics later

There's tons of trucks and SUVs in my city that run a second set of lights all the time. So I suppose I could wire them to be on all the time. Before my alternator went tits up, I would notice a large drop in voltage when they were on. So I just got used to never having them on.

You're both wrong and correct here. While I agree that having properly adjusted lights goes a long way, I will also say that HIDs are an issue with someone like myself that is much more sensitive to light. I have good vision. Just light sensitive.

If it came to a vote, I'd vote against them. But honestly I don't care enough to get it to that point (and it won't go there, ever). I also don't think it's ever going to catch on for the majority of new cars. LED's on the other hand...

I don't know that I'm gonna put lights on my safari rack, when I get around to making it. But these comments had me thinking today when I was at Harbor Freight...

At this price, I'd have 12 going in all directions lolol

i guess i wouldnt know what its like to be light sensitive, all i know though is that once you get HIDs there truly is a huge improvement in visibility...afterward driving a car with halogens feels like driving with sunglasses on 8)

adjusting your headlights can help a big ton in your OWN visibility, simply be aiming the light where its supposed to be.. not too high, not too low.
you could always get some EDM single lens lights, those things have an awesome clear and even distribution
