1st gen crx steering wheel

Hey guys I had an idea and wanted to check if it would be safe

I love my 1st gen crx steering wheel in my wagon, but it is more shallow than 88-91 steering wheels. Basically theres not enough room for my fat fingers between the wheel and the headlight stalk on the column.

Heres my question:

Would it be safe to put a few washers/spacer of some kind and use a 19mm nylock nut that is not as deep?

Those nuts (haha) are so strong that it would seem safe as long as the spline is threaded all the way through the nut.

    I don't see why not. As long as you can torque it to standard specs you should be ok. How much distance would you raise it? Would the nut be fully on the threads?
