How do I get the steering wheel off an '88 Wagovan?

My Haynes manual covers 84-91, and of course all the interior sections deal with the 84-87 vehicles :x

I want to replace my steering wheel as the rubber has separated from the frame, but can't figure out how to remove it. I'm assuming I just have to yank the horn cover off the wheel, but want verification before I destroy anything.

  • Pop the "H" badge off, there is a nut under there
  • For the 84-87, that would be correct. For the 88-91 that emblem is just glued on.

At least that is what it looks like to me. Has anyone removed the steering wheel on an 88-91 Wagon?
  • I recently pulled the steering wheel on my 90 rt, no glue, just popped off the H and used a 19mm socket.
  • I'll second that. After being led astray by my Chilton's, I nearly destroyed the horn pad in my 88RT. I found the correct answer on this site. Pry out the emblem and, viola, there is the retaining nut.

Gently pry. I recently replaced mine and the chrome part that trims around emblem was pretty brittle.
