Need to drive wagon home, Super bad carrier bushing

Hi guys,
I'm new here, just picking up y wagon tomorrow in fact :)
Had a question, I need to drive it home but the owner says there's a very bad vibration above 15mph. So i have come up with 2 ideas.

First, use the range lever thingey to put it in 2wd, but I am not sure if this will stop the driveshaft from spinning or not to cause the vibration. Would it?

Second, if that doesn't work, remove the driveshaft altogether. However, I can't find any instructions online or on alldata. I'm okay with mechanical stuff but I figure if I get a response here it'll save me time tomorrow picking it up. Any idea how hard this is? What all it entails?

Thanks guys, I did try searching this forum and google but not too much came up. any help would be really appreciated

  • If you take out the driveshaft, there's no need to select 2WD on the transmission. If the u-joints are bad, taking out the driveshaft should make it driveable. However, if it's the diff carrier bushings that are bad, the rear axles will still make the diff turn. That may still lead to vibration.

The driveshaft is not that difficult to take out. 4 bolts at the front where it attaches to the transmission, 4 bolts at the back where it attaches to the diff, and a couple bolts in the middle that hold the viscous coupling into the chassis. Beware, the bolts on the driveshaft flanges at the front and back are 12 point. Can't remember if they're 10mm or 12mm.
  • thank you. woukd selecting 2wd do the same thing as taking out the driveshaft though? would it stop it from spinning i mean? because it sounds easier to do that than to take out the driveshaft
  • No, the driveshaft continues to spin when in 2wd, being driven by the rear wheels. I discovered this when I gorked my drive shaft support bearing (note to self: need more ground clearance). It made an awful noise but got me home and then to the shop.
