+++SiWagon TIP: Stopping POWER STEERING Leaks B4 it starts.

:!: ONLY use HONDA Power Steering Fluid(or Honda compatiable).Any other power steering fluid or ATF will cause the PS to leak. It's formulated different(It's thicker & has some detergent in it).

 READ last paragraph Again :? If you just bought a wagon with power steering(PS).Replace the PS fluid. It's only 1 bottle. You can follow the Honda procedure which involves cranking the whl, hose removal, purging the air and mo cranking.
I did it the lazy fast way.If I remember right.I took a turkey baster and sucked as much of the fluid out the top and then refilled it with new Honda PS fluid.DONE. So there's still some old fluid in there. Most of it's clean. It's most likely never been replaced by the last owner.:D

Best to stick with the Honda PSF.The problem with some of the other PSF is that the PS gets really stiff in cold weather.

The following is what I've read on the web some don't blame me.
STP brand is BAD.
Lubegard PS additive claims to turn any PS fluid into Honda compatible PSF.
The following brands are Honda compatible :
Amsoil,Bardhal,NAPA,Prestone,Redline,Royal Purple & Valvoline Pyroil HPS-12.
Some of these PSF claim to be able to be used in other car makes. The funny part is I guess other car makes can run the thicker PSF.

Red highlites are updates.

1 bottle? My manual says 1.2 liters. I called Honda and the parts guy said it comes in pints, so I would need 3 bottles and end up with some extra. Are we talking pint bottles here? Bottles can come in different sizes?

Well, considering the post was made over four years ago, you might need to wait a while longer.

Ooorrrrrr...... you could do some foot work, and get back to us?

1 pint would replace what's in the reservoir, but 1.2 liters sounds about right for TOTAL capacity. That's reservoir, lines, pump, cooler, and rack.

Since my high pressure hose is leaking I would assume that all the fluid gets lost?
Probably a good idea to just do a complete replacement with new fluid.

I have never seen any "Honda compatible" fluid. Where is it sold? I just paid $4.50 each for 3 12 oz bottles of fluid from a Honda dealer, and now need 3 more. Grrrr.
  • I'm glad you bumped it. Honestly, this subsystem is one I haven't give much thought to.
