Bit of a problem?

soooo i ordered skunk2 coilover sleeves for 88-00 civic's. and i've got kyb gr-2's for a 91 civic hatch. but when i went to install the rear coils on the rear strut, the mount/top hat is NOWHERE near the spring! even with the coilover sleeve adjusted all the way to the top, there's a good 2 inches of space between the strut mount and spring.

what exactly did i do wrong here?

    did you install them right ie. fronts on front and rear in rear?

    yeah i matched the part numbers on the coils to front and rear. and of course the struts can only be installed one way.

    i'll double check the spring part #'s again tomorrow. seems to be the only reason they wouldn't work right? unless i was sold the wrong rear struts.

    I have the same thing on my Tein coilovers. I would just install them and see what happens.

    You need keeper springs/helper springs

    The smaller springs at the top, they keep the main spring captive and instantly compress once the weight is on them, you will probably want extended tophats too so that the shock still retains decent travel

    I have those as well and chose not to install them. Never had any issues.

    The teins in my ITR have them as well. They just keep tension on the spring to hold it captive, nothing to do with handling or anything

    okay so once the struts are installed on the car it should be good right?

    Yes you should be fine. There is no problem with the spring being loose when the strut is off the car, or when the car is jacked up off the ground. The springs are shorter because they have to be to lower the car, the shorter spring also increases the spring rate. You should use helper springs like suggested earlier, but they are not required. You will notice that the car rides a little better with the helper springs, because the springs wont come unseated during suspension droop (which really doesn't happen much unless youre rallying). If you don't feel like using the helper springs, sell them to me!

    I personally wouldnt feel safe driving around with uncaptive springs (hence why they are illegal in NZ) also when you go up driveways and the rear inside wheel lifts up the spring can fall sideways and not seat again properly once the weight is back on
