Show me pics of your muffler and exhaust setup! Need ideas on what will work.

I'm ready to get a new exhaust system built, and I need to decide on a muffler, as well as exactly how to route the piping. (the setup that was on it when I bought the car is all rusted out, falling apart, and I'm not sure it's routed in the most effective way)

After hearing a couple cars with Vibrant Streetpower mufflers, I like the tone. They do make some designed for sideways mounting, available with inlet/outlet both in the center, or center/offset (unfortunately not in flat black though), but I'm not sure if it will fit under the rear of the car, or if the in/out locations will allow for acceptable bends. I don't want to order something and then it just won't work due to size or inlet/outlet locations.

I am open to other mufflers as well.

Show me what mufflers/setups you have! Sideways mounted, straight mount under one side of the bumper, "ricer slant" whatever! I'm looking for ideas here, and it would be nice to have some reference pics to show the tech at the shop as well!

Thanks guys! So excited to get this done, last step before my two-year-long project is back on the road and legal!

PS- I would normally just search through EVERY SINGLE BUILD THREAD to find what I want, but there's a lot going on here recently, and I just don't have any spare time. I really appreciate the help!

  • See if you can also find Jaker's thread. He had a pretty nice tucked exhaust.

    Mine not so tucked.
  • Sorry i left that out, its an 89 RT4WD. I have been searching around, but unfortunately, many of the threads are from several years ago, before the forum moved, and many of the pics are just missing, or they're Photobucket links which no longer work due to being moved/deleted.
  • Yes I remember Jaker's exhaust now! That was pretty sweet!

Rage, I"m gonna need you to scrape the Honda off ;)

Everything about Jaker's exhaust is well above par. RIP

HKS exhaust modded to fit wagon. Expensive option, but looks great like stock but better.

  • 503 Your setup is beautiful! Did you build that yourself, or have a shop do it? I imagine a shop would charge quite the penny for something like that. Looks like a LOT of cutting/welding!
  • EDIT: Is that Jaker's car? I thought the exhaust looked familiar.

That's Jakers old setup on his RWD wagon, I saved the pictures because I want to do it to Jane once I finish up the turbo setup.
  • Lol, I thought so. As soon as somebody said Jaker earlier, that's the setup I remembered in my head, and for a second you had me thinking I had his mixed up with someone else's.

I'd like to have something like that if the shop won't charge me out the ass for it. I just like how neatly its tucked up under the car, lots of clearance.

Damn I wish I knew how to weld, and had the equipment to fabricate my own setup!
  • Jaker's is definitely a tight setup and far from being cheap. I fabbed my own but didn't have it in me to do all the pie cuts and welding he did to tuck it so being a lazy ass I ran mine as close to stock as possible. Mine alone with just material was roughly 400. Lots and lots of hours to make everything straight and level as well.

I don't know why I need to scrape the Honda off but will do boss! It is too bad about Jaker's wagon by far one of the meanest looking wagons on here.

This is my exhaust, for now pretty loud, but with right muffler right what I want! This will be good for turbo, as straight as possible:cool:

Now I have changed muffler and putted it more outside the rear bumper, but still it is like JDM style (not straight)

  • I like this setup, very simple, not too many bends. How is ground clearance? Your wagon looks pretty low, does the exhaust scrape on speed bumps?

BTW, I have been away from the site for like a year and a half. What happened to Jaker's wagon?

EDIT- I found out from his thread. Damn. I hope all the parts went to good homes!

be warned, the above setup will not work with any rear sway bar that i know of.

Clearence is very good, speed bumps are no problem! I will try to take a picture and upload it today ;)
Yeah, didn't notice about the sway bar.. But I think the rear sway bar on this 4wd system won't make a big difference, because that rear mount is pretty massive itself! It's not like all FWD hondas where the lower arm mounts are melted to chassis..

So here are some pics, lowest place is so high that I can put a iphone sideways below it. And that place is on the rear wheel axis and won't scratch on any speed bump.
